MORTLACH 25Y ~ SPEYSIDE, SCOTLAND
88/100 Whisky Base
The oldest expression in this range, the 25-year-old is matured exclusively in refill American oak casks which impart a rich, amber colour whilst retaining the balance between the underlying character of the spirit (the "distillery character"), and the flavours imparted by the wood.
Nose -Â Toffee and herbal notes, with floral scented candles, gooseberries, salted caramel, candied and fresh orange, spiced sponge cake and spiced butter. White grape, honeydew melon and lychee, as well as a touch of cinnamon spice.
Palate - Light and delicate, with milky coffee, cherry, biscuits and some gentle charcoal smoke. Quite fruity and spicy, with sharp pineapple and apple chews joined by cinnamon syrup and oak.
Finish - Earth, gentle wood spice and very old, polished oak.
The Mortlach distillery lies in Speyside’s spiritual heartland, Dufftown, and holds the honour of being the first legal distillery to be built there. Mortlach proffers a classic Speyside flavour, though the set up is far from typical; there are three wash stills and three spirit stills with a combined total capacity of 2.91 million litres annually.
