The 12-year-old expression from Old Pulteney released in mid-2018 was entirely aged in bourbon casks, resulting in a heavy influence of bourbon sweetness - which helps to balance the characteristic coastal salinity of the whisky.
Chihou (Highest Spirits) "Makes for pleasant drinking with some good depth from a relatively young whisky."
Gavin Smith (Whisky Advocate) "The ‘entry-level’ 12-year-old expression is widely available. The nose presents pleasingly fresh malt and floral notes, with a touch of pine. The palate offers a fuller-bodied, sweeter whisky than the nose might lead one to expect, with more malt, spices, fresh fruit, and a suggestion of salt. The finish is medium in length, drying, and decidedly nutty."
Nose - Honeycomb, vanilla tablet, soft sawdust oakiness, and oatcakes.
Palate - Chocolate peanuts, mint, citrus peels, maritime elements, and white pepper.
Finish - Toffee, brine, and lemon.
Though Pulteney is no longer mainland Scotland’s most northerly distillery its stills remain the country’s oldest. It is possible that they retain a similar design to that installed by James Henderson which was described as being similar to those as used by smugglers, though these are considerably larger.
